Blog #1 Health Concerns

The health issues that I am most concerned with are:
1) Healthy eating habits-I am concerned with eating properly because colon cancer is in my family history. There is also a history of heart problems.
2) Exercise-as I stated above, we have a family history that warrants me to exercise and eat healthy. Trying to be active while being a full time student/full time stay at home mom is tough!
3) Health insurance for the middle class worker (hourly wage earner). Many times they cannot afford to be off of work even if they are sick.

Number one and two are concerns for myself and my family. Number three is a general concern I feel everyone should be concerned with because of the state of our health care system.

Lou Nell, age 62, white female
1) Health care and insurance is her #1 main concern. She wants to retire now, but because of her health care coverage, she cannot retire until 65. She also worries about paying for medication after retirement.
2) Being alone-it is hard for an older person to be alone after many years of having a companion. She also worries if something was to happen to her if she is alone, what would she do? She feels being alone for the first time in her life and it being at this age has adversely affected her health.

Kim, age 40, white female
1) Osteoporosis-she is trying to have enough calcium now to try to prevent what she can in the future. She realizes that once you find out you have this, often it is too late to have an impact on the outcome.
2) Stress- she believes trying to manage stress is key. She believes that it is the #1 factor in deteriorating health. By managing stress, she feels one can cut their chances of cancer and heart issues.

I feel Lou Nells #1 concern goes along with my health care concern, but #2 doesn't really apply to me.
Kim's concerns don't exactly match up with mine as far as what I put down, but the healthy eating can certainly help with the prevention of Osteoporosis. Stress is something that I didn't put down, but probably should have.

Hey Jennifer,

I'm glad to see that you are in another one of my classes!

I agree with you about eating habits being an important health issue. Although cancer is not a concern in my family, obesity is a concern. Many women in my family have a problem with being overweight. Being hispanic I feel that I really need to watch my eating habits and teach my son good haibts as well. Excercise falls in the same lines. Eating properly cannot help alone. Exercising is important for other factors such as osteoporosis and obesity. Great post!

I agree with you about eating habits being a major concern among women. Eating and exercise are major contributors to ones overall health. Because fast foods are more convenient for people these days, eating healthy is a hard job to do. Many of us have a hard time squeezing in time to go to the gym or exercise period. So weight becomes an issue when we are not able to treat our bodies properly.

Hi Jennifer,

I love your blog scheme…I chose the same one. The browns and earth tones with a mix of contemporary and antiquity, leave you with a relaxed and pleasant feel.

I believe we had classes together in the past. Sounds like you are keeping up your school work. Your post and blog are relevant and you sound serious about your health as well as your interest in other's health concerns.

Seems like we all agree with the diet and exercise emphasis. The negative affects are not only detrimental with immediate health concerns but dangerous in the long haul. Long term, our bodies cannot survive the inappropriate and inconsistent diets and lack of cardiovascular and bone strengthening exercises. I see so many patients who have literally ruined their bodies. Blaming ill health on diet and lack of exercise turns many people off because they just don’t believe it could happen, especially to them but the research and data don’t leave much to question. We are in trouble.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Jennifer! I've missed you in my classes this semester, but I'm glad we have some online classes and ESG. I think it is very wise that you know what diseases you are at risk for and that you are taking steps to prevent it. I think that is the most important thing that most people don't do. They'll recognize they have a problem, but won't take steps to fix it until it is too late. All of the concerns you listed are things that we all should be concerned about. Exercise, healthy eating, and stress management alone can help prevent so many other diseases. I look forward to reading more of your posts!-- Elise
