Blog #13 Jail or Treatment

For me, the answer is pretty clear. If jail is needed, then there should be a treatment component to this. Sending people to jail, then letting them out without any change in behavior does absolutely nothing for most people. Why send let them out of jail when we know they are probably be returning soon. I feel that we need to give addicts a chance to change their behaviors. In order to do that, there must be a treatment component for them. There will be some that will be able to stop on their own, but for the most part, people are going to hang around the same crowds and do the same behaviors again.

Jenn- You are so right, I think that if so one is being put in jail than they need help of some kind or they will be right back in jail, it will just be a matter of time. Addicts of any kind need help. Drugs have become a major issue in our world today. It is very heartbreaking.

I think the treatment programs would be better than jail, unless the addict hurt someone while under the influence. It is too easy to get the drugs into jails, so I don't believe that jails will help most addicts. If you are going to put them away for a while, put them into a treatment program to help them overcome their addictions.

I agree. There must be a mandatory treatment component to the jail sentence. Why waste time putting them in jail again later when you could save that room for pedophiles and such criminals (who also may need treatment as well, by the way, but are more dangerous). Addiction can be a physical disease with a genetic causation sometimes. The addicts need treatment to overcome the vicious cycle.
